Noob Questions- excuse me if this has already been posted
« on: January 22, 2010, 10:20:00 PM »
Ive recently been looking into upgrading my mics  ,the recorder I mostly use is the Edirol R-09 hr
Ive decided on Church Audio cards I was wondering the difference between the CA-11 and the CA-14 's  .and the prices . Also the preamps is it needed or could I just use the plug in power off the recorder theres a 9100 i guess and a 9000  any adivce. Ive been taping for years with just an iriver ifp899 and giant squid labs omi' clip mics /line in . Looking for higher quality recordings

One of main differences AFAIK is that the CA-11 have switchable capsules (cardioid or omni) while the CA-14 is fixed.  Also, the CA-14 is reputed to yield higher quality recordings, and also has a non-removable windscreen attached to it.  Not sure about the plug-in power question though.

To answer the rest of your question, no, you should not use the recorder's plug-in power (unless the recorder has been specially modified to power these mics).  Instead, you should get either one of the Church Preamps (the 9100 is better; has more gain settings) or just get a simple battery box.  The preamps are around $129 I think; battery boxes can be had for $60 or less.  Some people feel that using one of the pres yields higher quality recordings because the electronics in the pre are better than those in the Edirol (very likely true); though it is worth pointing out that if you are recording amplified rock music, you may not hear much of a difference.

to follow up with everyone's statements, get this and then you're ready to roll:

-ca-14 (start with cards and then get ominis)
-pre amp, st-9100
-you will need a mic stand / light stand
-some way of putting the mics on the light stand:
http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-GNA-3
I have that with the shock mount and it requires some reducer. someone else could chime in as what it is
-interconnector cable from pre-amp to recorder
-perhaps an extension cable used from the mics to the pre-amp
-batteries for HR and pre-amp

yeah, he gets back to people quickly but it may take some time to actually get the mics in the mail.

enjoy them!

No because the main problem with that mount is it does not allow for the "back vents" to work properly.. It would work for other types of mics just not mine.
And ps.. I thought it was pretty funny about the whole "bp" thing.. YOU did not look like an ass, kinda reminded me of something I would do lol...
