Does AT&T thrwart bittorrent traffic like Comcast?
« on: February 08, 2010, 06:21:22 PM »
I used to have broadband from Comcrap.  I wasn't very happy with their internet or cable TV service.  One problem was that thing they do where they make your bittorents stop.  This is a well-known problem - in fact my friend Jon is heading a class action suit against them about this.

I switched to AT&T DSL.  I signed up for the service that is supposedly "best for downloads." But I have the same thing happen to me - I come home from work, or wake up or whatever and there is no bittorrent activity.  In fact with AT&T, it seems to stop all internet traffic - I always have to reset the router.  I've already complained about this once - they sent me a different router, but it has the same problem.

Has anybody heard about AT&T doing this too?

Google that.  Comcast got a cease and desist from the FCC, I believe.  They are in violation to throttle traffic.  I saw an immediate change in Charter.  AT&T are a bunch of pricks.  I used to work for them.  They do not believe any law applies to them.  Only to other folks.

Now that I've got that off my chest, they may or may not be throttling your service.  Traffic is heaviest during the day.  Nighttime is best for torrents.

Cheers

I have AT&T DSL and have not noticed my torrents being actively throttled.  I can pretty easily saturate my upstream bandwidth and that in turn slows down my browsing, but I pretty consistently see my torrents run at or above my upstream "minimum" of 500kb/s

Elwood: What?
Jake: This car. This stupid car. Where's the Cadillac? The Caddy? Where's the Caddy?
Elwood: The what?
Jake: The Cadillac we used to have. The Blues Mobile!
Elwood: I traded it.
Jake: You traded the Blues Mobile for this?
Elwood: No. For a microphone.
Jake: A microphone? Okay I can see that.

Comcast switched from specifically screwing up BitTorrent traffic to a more generalized throttling based on bandwidth usage. I haven't noticed any problems seeding torrents since they switched to the general approach.

Generally ISP's want to charge you for the bandwidth but punish you if you want to use it.

Same here in NH. Never throttled even when others were getting throttled.
