Small wearable mics?
« on: February 20, 2010, 10:13:06 AM »
Hi all,

In a previous post we were discussing mics.  I have CA-14s (omnis and cards) and BB.  I've only taped a few shows, so would not consider myself experienced.

The problem is that unless the CA-14s are hat worn in a K*****, they are too big to wear in any other way.  I'm looking for a smaller wearable set up.

It seems like the best recommended set up was a CM-4 body + adapter + CM-8 caps (omnis).  This gives most flexibility and best size.  I can then add CM-4 caps (cards) later if necessary.  Opinions?

Any opinion regarding CA-14s cards vs CM-4 cards (I've been told the CM-8 cards do not sound as well).

Finally, what are the opinions on cards vs omnis?  I've never even used the CA-14 cards yet as I've heard that recording is much more difficult with cards (having to keep more still, pointed to the target, cannot cover vents ,etc).  In addition, when comparing the "sound" of the CA-14 cards and omnis at home, the omnis sounded much better?

Thanks in advance for all opinions!

I stXXlth the CA-14's and not in a hat just fine. You need to be creative.  To me, they are the best mics in their price range. Card vs Omni depends on my venue, the crowd, and a number of other variables.  Indoors I like cards, outside omnis. Since most of what I tape it lo-pro I favor cards to take out much of the audience chatter.
Busman Audio BSC1-K1/K2/K3/K4 > HiHo Silver XLR's > Deck TBD

CA-14 (c,o)/MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod)/AT853(4.7k mod)(c,o,h,sc)/CAFS (o)/CA-1 (o) > CA-9100 (V. 4.1)/CA-9200/CA-UBB > Sony PCM-D50/Sony PCM-M10

I've never seen any CA-14 in real-life, but I'm sure they are smaller than the CMC-4's (which are quite big compared to most stealth mics). CMC-8's are smaller than both and although some people don't like their sound, I have some and they are great.

Thanks, please PM me regarding your stXXlth techniques with the CA-14s.  Interested in how you achieve height, separation, and prevent "rubbing" of the windscreens on any adjacent fabric.  My understanding is that you cannot hat mount cards because you will obstruct the mic vents?

Appreciate the input!

I also dont know how large in comparison CA-14s are, but i have CA-11s that I have stealth taped a number of times...

I usually wear a black, button-up shirt and run the wire in between the shirt and my undershirt down to my pants pocket where the pre/recorder are.

I then put the mics between my shirt and my undershirt until right before stage time, then remove the mics and clip them to the tips of each collar.  Ofcourse the downside is anything you say compromises your tape, but its been pretty easy to do and I have been able to do it in tough venues with success.

I believe the smallest mics are Church Audio CAFS-OMNI Mics (currently on back order), although not cards. They look a lot like the Countryman b6.

AKG SE300b (CK91/CK93) or SP-LSD2 > Busman Transparency mod Tascam HD-P2
