iRiver h120 static
« on: March 01, 2010, 08:32:03 PM »
After I upgraded to a new version of Rockbox, I used my remote while recording a show. Now it has what sounds like static, but I'm sure it's some sort of thing caused by the remote. Luckily, I did the headliner without the remote for a different reason (when I changed the gain from the remote, it created new files, wtf).

1. What's the deal with the remote? I've never had good luck with it. It's so useful, but sucks so bad.

2. Is there anything I can do to fix this noise? I know this should be a different thread, but it does relate to the remote problem.

Uhh, hmm. Now it seems I can't even hear the clicks anymore. I still had the problem of it creating a new file every time I changed the gain on the remote. Why is that?

It is a known hardware issue, not much we can do about it. Look at the remote as a giant antenna, so the noise you hear depends on transmission sources nearby.

There also used to be a problem with some remotes or irivers causing ticking noises when updating the LCD. Also a hardware limitation. For that problem, there is a trick to disable the remote LCD from updating while the keys stay working. It's a setting or a key-combo, probably mentioned in the manual (I never used it).

Can you explain the new file problem further, I'll try to reproduce here when I find time.

It's version r23879-091206. When I noticed my gain was too low, I pressed the knob few times to make it go up a few notches on the remote. When I got home, there were several R_LINE files. Most only a few kilobytes, and the one that had all the music on it which was large. I did notice it started a new file when I adjusted the gain at the concert, too. The red light came on and "pre-recording..." showed for a second before showing the filesize go up again.

Checked and unable to reproduce completely. It seems the remote buttons are quite sensitive, so pushing the lever left/right for gain change risks that you pusg it down as well, which causes a new recording. Sometimes I saw it send another command, so maybe the reading of the buttons can use better tresholds for button detection.

Thanks for checking. I guess using the remote isn't as important nowadays with everyone checking their cellphones all the time.

This behaviour could also be caused by a bad optical cable (or loose 90 degree adapter), in case you're running SPDIF from the UA-5. Might be worth checking too.

I was stealthing, so it was using line-in, not optical. It seems most likely it's the button threshold issue petur said.
