how to torrent thread
« on: May 13, 2010, 11:34:53 AM »
tried searching but am pulling up 5400 results and can't find anything in the stickies in the computer section.  I'm sure there is a thread somewhere about a dummies guide to torrenting.  Can someone point me in that direction?

.shn is the shorten file format that used to be the standard in lossless file compression before FLAC came around.  If you use FLAC, you shouldn't ever have to worry about .shn...the only time I encounter .shn anymore is when I want to download an older show from archive that hasn't been upconverted to FLAC.

ok cool, so just paste the md5 text into that box like archive.

also, where do I get the db.etree.org link from?  it says it is optional but just in case I need it, I don't see it listed anywhere on the page.  If it will auto fill in later I will just forget about it.

good job. It's a lot easier than I thought too. Your internet connection may suffer for a little while as people download but ideally they should host it on their computer as well.

if you limit your upload speed to like 2/3rds of your max, you most likely won't notice a difference

yeah I seeded until I hit a 2.0 ratio and closed it because my internet was getting hammered. I'll open it back up in a few mins now that I'm done working.

Can i close the client when my ratio hits 1.0 or is it not guaranteed that 100% of it has transferred at that point?

unless you turn superseeding (or initial seeding in utorrent, not sure what you're using), no

What application are you using? I am using utorrent and it looks pretty customizable where you can limit the download/upload speeds during particular times of the day, it has a transfer cap, a bandwidth monitor, etc. I don't think a torrent client will be able to figure out if 100% of the file has been transferred to just one person unless only one person connects to the torrent during the entire time.

If you're worried about your speeds being sucked up, I would put the torrent on when you'll be away from your computer for several hours and when you're back, you can start looking into various limitations for upload speeds.

I'm using bit torrent 6.4

woudln't normally be a problem but I have a friend staying with me while doing his residency and he said that he coudln't even get his medical journals to load when I had the thing going.  I left to go to a baseball game for a few hours and didn't even think about it.  I just blamed it on him having a mac and told him to deal with it

think of it this way

your files that you're seeding are split up into a bunch of pieces, like pages from a book.

say your book has 500 pages. if more than one person is downloading from you, you could send the same page twice, thus still uploading 500 tota pages (ie ratio over 1.0), but you wouldn't have upped all the pages in the book.

there's an option called "super seed" which will only send out each piece of the file once until you hit 1.0, which solves this problem.
