Topic: Smallest (reliable) New Flash Recorder?

Been out of the loop for a while when it comes to recorders, but I am considering putting together a very low profile rig.

I am thinking of something like CA CAFS Omni > CA Ugly (BB or Pre) > recorder

As you can see from the rest of the proposed set up, I am looking to keep it really small so would like the recorder to be in the same vein.

I have done a quick search for size comparison, but got nothing informative back, so apologies if I have missed it.

I would imagine most of these devices now run 24 bit, I have no real need for built in mics, although if they were there in a really small machine I guess they could come in handy, ability to go directly mic in would be good for really low pro situations.

I am in the UK so most shows are a maximum of 2 hours so internal batteries are ok, but I would prefer rechargeable AA or AAA, and I don't need massive flash card support. Budget is pretty open as most of the new range of recorders seem to be in the same ballpark.

The M10 runs forever, and I do mean forever on 2 AA's.  I'd keep the M10 in the mix even though there may be small solid state recorders on the market.

Yup, that's going to be hard to beat for small and reliable. It probably sounds good too!

I had an M10 in my hand last month.  I didn't really compare it, but I think it's might be larger than my R09.

The original R09 (63*102*29 mm) is a little shorter and a little thicker than the PCM-M10 (62*114*21.8 mm), while the R09HR (62*113*27 mm) is almost the same size as the Sony.  The differences are so slight as to have no practical effect, really.  Is there anything that's a lot smaller?  The LS-11 is narrower, but longer.  I guess the DR-08  is a little smaller...

The M10 is a much better recorder than the R-09, so I wouldn't care if it was a hair bigger. The R-09 will make great recordings if the source is loud. Otherwise you need an external pre to make recordings comparable to what you'd get with an M10.

What about the Marantz PMD620 as an option? It runs on 2 AA's, records in 24 bit, has a line-in if your going to use the CA Ugly preamp, and records to SD cards of unlimited size.

It's a great recorder according to everyone who has used one. A bit more expensive for what you get than some of the others, but it does provide more plug in power voltage than the other good ones (so can run more mics without a battery box or preamp, if that is important to you).

However a few people here who used to swear by it switched to the M10 and seem to be happy with the switch. Maybe one of them will chime in...

Typically just as I start to plan something life gets in the way, but it will be handy to come back to when I am ready to jump.

I have the Olympus LS-10 (the new LS-11 is better).

I am hearing nice things about the new H4N.

The Edirol R-09HR is also a good bet and (I think) the only one with a recovery tool installed that can recover a lost file if the TOC didn't get written for some reason (eg: batteries running out).
