5 position bass roll off microphone battery box?
« on: February 06, 2004, 09:42:08 PM »
Hello,

I have heard of 5 postion bass roll off battery boxes but oviously they are not used for live music.

What would these be used for?

A 5 position roll off box has 5 switchable settings for the level of bass roll of you need.  However, it seems to me that at the highest setting the sound would be so thin that you couldn't record music with it.

Soundprofessionals and Microphone Madness sells them.

Anyone know what these are used for?

they are used for recording shows.  The highest setting probably is never used, but I have a set of SP AT 853 mics and I have changed the rolloff based on if I am stealthing an acoustic show, rock show or rap show...not ideal, but it is nice if your seats are too damn close to the cabinets to know that you can attempt to roll off some of the bass.

It's really a sort of gimmick - at least, the values for the settings are.

true, especially for SP, but bass roll off as a concept is not a bad thing to have access to

I am thinking of making one myself but with not such drastic roll off points.

They make capacitors (the things that provide the roll off) in values of .068, .048, .039?, .033, and .022 microfarads.  Anyone can make the roll off selections more incrementaly even.  I may try it sometime next month.

I was thinking that folks used them for other stuff like man-on-the-street-type of interviews where decreasing the bass will help isolate voices better.

.22 caps provie way too much bass roll off for music, IMHO, and I really don't like the cheap DIP switches that others use as roll off selectors.  They aren't good enought for high fidelity recordings.

This could be quite a DIY project.

roll off is more commonly used for prevention of handling and windnoise. It's very useful when recording dialog outside either handheld or on a boom...

Bri

which is also why it helps to get rid of that low rumble that you get sometimes at these metal/rock shows... ;D
