Clamps Clamps Clamps........
« on: July 06, 2010, 05:53:01 PM »
How could you record and not own a clamp!

If you don't own a clamp buy one and carry it with you...........The reason I say this is..........Last night for Further at Stroudsburg the taper section was 10' by 10' with 21 tapers! there were only few tapers prepared for such an event....Myself/friends and another guy....We had 4 sets of mics on one stand and 3 sets on another..........everyone else had a stand.....IT was a complete cluster "F"..... We could have easily consolidated down to about 4 or 5 stands.......There were 2 tapers that couldn't even set up because the section was out of room and no one had a clamp.......it was ridiculous....There were people that were even boxed in and had to stand the whole time....it was crazy and freakin hot.....if your going to record please spend the 10$ for a clamp, its not going to break the bank for you, and be prepared for anything....Sorry for the rant :P

As always peace.

I don't like a forest of stands and agree all should clamp on when viable and share stands. I have clamps for almost any occasion.

Just about, I have something for just about any occasion. Missing a good rowi-clone though. Between that, a nano, and a superclamp, that covers 95% of what you might see in the field (and a large C-style clamp would be the remaining one that I can think of). Any others?

Wait, no ranting about that taper who kept knocking over his own mic stand into everybody else's mic stand because he didn't extend the footprint of his stand? Or that lady that fell into the section during the second set taking down a few stands? I'm glad we were prepared for that madness.

If you want DFC, clamping is the way to go.  Less stands, more clamps.

Jerry Bruck sold me the Pedco Ultra Clamp last fall (and I could have swore I paid way more than it lists now), and I love it.  Super sleek, flexible, and secure.

It bends in all sorts of directions.

thats a great idea. If you drill a 1/2" hole at the end, you can then use a small threaded bolt to screw your shockmount to. that way you don't have to add the extra weight of the windtech.

What's a clamp?

All I have is a table top tripod thingy for the camcorder.  Plus a couple headphone clamps.  In combination it allows me to affix my camcorder to the mic stand.  But I don't have anything like those for affixing the 5/8" mic stuff.  Much less a stand capable of supporting that kind of weight.

Here are a couple of photos I took at the Sherman Theatre 7/5/10 from the show mentioned in the original post.  The first one is of the section after everyone was setup but several tapers arrived late after the photo was taken.  The second photo shows one of the mic tree's at the show where multiple tapers were clamped to one stand.  It would have been nice if those who arrived late could have clamped on, there were certainly enough stands to clamp to that had space.  The stands I saw tip over were not taped down and the floor was sloped.
