Cheap way to DAT > WAV via USB or Firewire
« on: July 25, 2010, 04:11:26 PM »
HI,

I've recently gotten the bug to start taping again.  I ended up selling my desktop that I used for DAT > WAV via Wave Terminal soundcard.  I still have the soundcard somewhere, but have a laptop now that has USB and a Fire-wire connection.  Right now I'm looking for something that's fairly inexpensive (~$100).  is this possible... ?  Obviously I want to stay in the digital realm and don't want to do any unnecessary re-sampling.

Are you committed to sticking with the DAT?

Instead of investing in that, you could buy a used iriver for close to $100, or for a little more, an R-09. You will love transferring files with either of those!

def  not comminted to using DAT... It's the what i have right now (old D8).  I know little to nothing about modern digital recorders... I'm just trying to not spend a lot of money right now :)

I have an old D8 as well. Great machine, but tapes are getting hard to find, and transferring stuff is a nightmare compared to the newer stuff.

Before spending money on that, I'd check out some of these:

I've used the older R-09, good stuff. I'm not familiar with the Tascam, but you can find more info on all of these units here:

And maybe search for an iriver, or post an ISO.

What kind of mics and preamp do you have?

IMO the only reason to own a DAT deck nowadays is for playback of stuff you're transferring to hard drive. Any DAT repairs are going to cost you more than what a new digital recorder goes for, and you've still got to deal with the cost of physical media (not to mention storage).
