archive.org band abbreviations?
« on: July 30, 2010, 07:53:14 PM »
Hello everybody
I am finally trying to upload a show to the archive.  I tried yesterday, but it was rejected because the identifier was already taken.  It must have been by some other artist with the initials "NM" because I know I'm the only one that taped.

I think my problem is I can't figure out the band abbreviation.  I've found a couple webpages that list them, but not the one I'm looking for.
The artist is Nathan Moore.  Does anybody know Nathan's band abbreviation, or where to find it?

Well, by looking at what has already been uploaded it looks like the abbreviation should be nm.  Unless they changed it for some reason which would be really dumb in most cases.

That's what I figured at first.  I tried it again using "NathanMoore" and it seems to have worked

It's rare that we get collisions like this but it's bound to happen with more bands getting approved and people wanting to use the shortest abbreviation possible.

The list that's linked from the upload page is really just a guideline; we used to have a system where bands were automatically filed by the abbreviation used, so it was necessary to have different ones. Now things are wide open so you could use anything you want that makes sense - nm, nmoore, nathanmoore, nathan, etc. Hell, you could have named it britneyspears2010-07-27.flac96 if you wanted to, though we probably would have asked you to change it. ;D
