Edirol R-44: monitoring via Digital outs possible?
« on: August 29, 2010, 08:01:41 AM »
I would like to 4-track with the R 44 but want to monitor the inputs via didgital outs for recording backups on laptop or separate metering. Does anyone know if this is possible?
Thanks

Not sure, but i think so.  I can do that with the original R-09, never tried it with the R-44.  Easy enough to test.

According to the manual it outputs the same signal as the headphone output.  The output to that is selected by pressing the Monitor knob.  The output however is fixed in level.  So, on the face of it, it can be set to output all four channels from the digital output, but I've not actually ever tried it.

I've played with the settings.  When  monitoring all 4 channels, it outputs a mono output to the digital out (or headphone out).   If will pass "accurate" representation of channels solo'd or 1/2 or 3/4 pairs.

I guess it's been too long since I owned an R-44 and forget what they will do exactly now.

It remains my chief problem with the otherwise excellent R-44 that you can't set up a properly panned and balanced monitor mix.  1 and 3 are always hard left, 2 and 4 are always hard right (or as noted above, all in mono).  That's why I got Jon at Naiant to create a companion monitor mixer device to go with mine.
