Olympus DM-4 opinions wanted
« on: September 08, 2010, 05:12:39 PM »
Hello:

We are considering carrying the Olympus DM-4 and we are looking for opinions on it. It sells for $299.00 and has 8gb built in with a micro SD slot for more. It has a nice sturdy feel (it's skin is mostly aluminum). Lot's of other features.....

Here is a link:

If there is interest, we might be able to do a special buy for members....

Comments?

If you have any questions, please let me know.

It may be great for some people's needs, but looks terrible for a serious taper. I scanned the manual and don't think it has a line in. If not, what serious taper would consider it? Also it doesn't record higher than 16/48. For the money, if designed for taping, it should go up to 24/96.

May be great for podcasts, but it offers a ton of gimicky features tapers don't need and I'm sure it won't be a fraction as good for taping as the cheaper Sony M10.

Cool............thanks for asking.  Not many companies care about our needs.

as for the DM-4:

no line in ......... 16/48 is the best rate.....  and

The Overall Frequency Response      PCM
48 kHz 16bit: 40-23,000 Hz

MP3
128 kbps: 40-17,000 Hz

Mic
70-20,000 Hz

a real taper probably wouldn't touch this piece of gear....

I'd have to agree with previous comments, it looks great (color screen and all) until I see only 16 bit on the high end. With all the decks out right now, not having 24 bit would seem a step backwards. I usually record 24/48, so if it did not have 96 I could bite, but not with the ceiling at 16 bit.

Thanks for asking!

I missed the fact that it doesn't do 24 bits on my original post. That is a huge omission-I don't care about 96 Hz either but thought many would want it.  Another MAJOR flaw that I didn't notice, that OtheroneK pointed out, is that the mic in (and remember there's no line in) is limited to 70-20,000 Hz. Who could consider that for serious taping even if it cost much less?
