ROLAND R-05 v TASCAM DR-07.. Opinions please..
« on: September 25, 2010, 10:17:25 AM »
Going to need to replace my Zoom H2 as my daughter is off to Uni and wants it to record lectures.

The two units I'm considering are these.  I've read a lot of reviews and they seem  my best options consideirng my budget. They both have everythign I need- I will mainly use it for recording loud rock shows in  venues from a pub to an arena and I will use a pair of CA-14's via the mic input (The set up I currently use with my H2).

I suppose what I'm looking for is some 'real world' help from people who've actually used these in the same way I would use them.

I'm based in the UK so the prices on these units are around £130 for the Tascam and £160 on Roland.

Thanks in advance

i would now prefer the roland (can record 24Bit / 96khZ) and it´s a bit smaller then the tascam + has a bit more solid metal housing (Tascam =  plastic box)

 i have the DR-07 recording with CA-14 Mics with preamp via line in, maybe better choice on very loud shows... but you can do this on the roland also. But i´f not found if the Line In Gain is adjustable like on the Tascam.

Battery running time not a problem - using the Tascam with eneloops ...
2015 rig: CA-11 -> CA-9100 -> PCM-M10
2016 rig: Sony PCM-M10 + SP-SPSB-4 microphone plug-in power supply +  SP-CMC8 with Low Sens mod
[backup: CA-9100 - Tascam DR-05 Firmware 2.0 + Yamaha Pocketrak W24]
video 2016: Casio EX-100 HS (same as Olympus Stylus1 - but much smaller - japan import not availiable in EU)

R-05 is a better deal. Noise levels should be similar to R-09HR, which har better reputation than the Tascam bottom end gear:
