Single Point Stereo "stealth" mic options?

Hello everybody!

Can anybody shed some advice on the choice of single point stereo lavalier Mics to replace my ECM 121, (which must be nearly 20 years old)?
I don't regularly record with it, but occasionally it's appropriate and I just wondered if there was a higher quality discrete front end available to take it's place... I was thinking about a pair of ECM 88s if I can get them.

Although my primary recording interest is places and environments, when using the 121, I have been in more close up indoor situations and wondered if I could UP the quality without the size? Is the ECM CS 10 any good??- it seems very cheap...

May want to check out the retail thread and look at some of Chris' ChurchAudio gear. the CA-14 gets some good reviews around here.

CA-14's sound great and will allow you to separate them & get more stereo separation than you would with a single point stereo mic.

Otherwise, I have always liked the sound of the AT822 (just my ears anyways). If  you are looking for a true 'SinglePointStereo' mic that is haha.. take care

or the CAD E-70... might be a bit more 'stxxxxable' than the 822, if you know what stxxxlth means

Chris Church makes a great product, but most of his stuff is not on his website. You have to learn about it by reading posts here. Plus you never want to buy from him off of his website or E-Bay anyway. He offers a discount to taperssection members. Contact him by PM on this board here:

If you are looking at the cads, look at Karma K-10 mics then too.  I've been looking at them for cheap addition to the mic locker.  But neither are what I would consider "small footprint, low profile" mics.  Audix 1290 ( I think it's 1290 or 1280 I'd have to look it up), or of course the AT 853's or the Church stuff mentioned or maybe any active type set up.  Since you didn't mention price range there are a lot of options.

rode nt5 set. They are not single point stereo mics but like Kirkd said, you didn't mention a price range.

also take a look at the rode nt4. but for a couple hundred, the at822 fits the bill.

What are you recording into?

The AT822 was discontinued a year or two ago, after having been in production for perhaps 20 years. AudioTechnica has several other stereo microphones in this general format nowadays; the AT8022 might be the closest equivalent.

Your description is a bit hazy when it comes to what kind of situations you actually need the stxxlth for.
Is it for loud music, acoustic music, recording voice/conversations...?
If you intend to tape music, an SPS mic is not ideal, as others mentioned. But if you only record ambient sounds or speech you might not care for stereo separation?

Some of the mics others here suggested aren't really stealthy at all.

You intend to rely the internal preamp of the HHB recorder?
I'm not sure how much gain it provides, but you might consider shopping for an external pre at the same time. The Church combo has been mentioned...
