Need advice on good backup program for Windows 7
« on: October 01, 2010, 03:44:11 PM »
Hi!

I would like to hear if someone can recommend a good backup program. I have been using a relatively crappy program so far... it did the job, but no longer in Windows 7, it seems... I need the following:

  • The program must easily allow me to make more than one backup of all the files I want backed up, I like to have backups on external hdds in different places
  • I would prefer if the format the backup was in was such that I could read the file system and use files directly, not having to restore them in any way...

Anyone?

By "more than one backup", do you mean multiple historical versions of the same file?

Say you have file F.  You back it up on Day 1, creating backup file F.  You edit the file on Day 2 and make another backup, F2.  On Day 3, you edit the file again and make yet another backup, F3.  At any point in time, you can recover F, F2, and/or F3.

Or do you simply mean you want to back up file F to multiple destinations (e.g. HDD 1, HDD 2), and it's okay to overwrite the previous backup each time?

Plenty of s/w tools available,d epending on what you're trying to accomplish.  I believe they can do the former, but not without a fair amount of scripting involved.

if you just want a simple sync program this is great

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=c26efa36-98e0-4ee9-a7c5-98d0592d8c52&displaylang=en

easier than just dragging files to the other drives.

This seems to be exactly what I was after... Thanks!
