AT8533x Switch Question?
« on: October 15, 2010, 09:37:30 PM »
So can anyone tell me what the switch on the adapters do?  Mine are both in the up position (facing the XLR male connectors)...anyone know what the different positions do/mean for my recordings?

" A low frequency roll-off switch which minimizes structure and wind noise."

A wonder what B&H means by minimizing structure? The wording is curious to me....

I don't have the same phantom adapters, but mine have a bass roll off switch.

I have these adaptors on my AT853's and have never had reason to use them. I guess if you run straight into a deck they do have their value, but I've always had a pre-amp in the chain between my mics and the deck, so they have been a non issue.

Myco...It's my understanding that the adapter drop the voltage down so 48p does not blow the mics.  The rolloff is just an addition to their real purpose.  Correct me if I'm wrong?

If I plugged my 853s directly into my BM2P+ uA-5 without these adapters and was using the phantom power it would blow the mics.

Quite possibly yes. The adaptors are meant for downgrading the 48v phantom output going to the mics. My comments were referring specifically to the roll off switch if I created any questions with my response. My AT8533x adaptor's are hardwired straight to my AT853's, so I don't use the two independently of each other. Here is a link to my recording using them for Roger Waters a couple weeks ago.

If the adapter looks like this:

|            |
|    |-|    |
|    | |    |
|    | |    |
|           |
 \         /
   \     /

You can see the switch is in the top position near the 3-Pin end.  Does that mean it is set in the "Flat" position OR the "Roll-Off" position???

Sorry for the crude diagram...

You should have some lines marked on the adaptor; straight line = off , bent line = on
With the switch in the position of the bent line it signifies "bass roll-off" as in looking at the wav on a spectrum.

Thanks!  They are there but very faint so I didn't see them until I could get the light to shine just right on them...
