Single at853 > stereo mini trs
« on: November 04, 2010, 01:21:46 PM »
I have a TS member who wants me to modify a single AT853 that has a mini xlr.  He wants to terminate it with a stereo mini 1/8" , basicly a two channel mono set up.   Would i wire it as follows....

(+) = tip & ring
(-) = sleeve
ground = sleeve

[me thinking out loud]
red is the voltage pin 3 in the mini-xlr (which if powered off of a custom 9v bb would be wired up direct to the 9v pos chain)
yellow is audio[send/cold] pin 2 in mini-xlr (which would end up at either tip or ring)
black shield pin 1 in mini-xlr (which would be your sleeve)

uhh.. i really dunno.. would it not depend on how the 853 is being powered?

edit..
if your customer wants to use plug in power off a recorder is the 1.5-3v that its going to push going to be enough to run an 853? If that is the case would the yellow and red not then both be tied down to tip and ring and black be then tied down to shield...? got me stumped ted. - paging chris

How does the Sound Pros wire their AT mics with the mini plugs? Aren't they doing exactly this just with 2 mics?

Just send the "signal"(yellow) to the tip and ground the red and ground together, that essentially makes it a mono plug(if i remember correct) or use a mono plug for the same results

This will probably *not* work.

If you want to send the same signal to both channels, do this:
red > tip and ring together
 yellow + shield > both to sleeve/ground

That will not handle loud volumes.  To handle loud volumes you need to insert a 4.7k resistor between the yellow and shield wires.

Now, that said, if you don't understand this, I suggest sending it to someone who does.  Chris Church or perhaps Busman.  Those guys will sort it out.  I don't think you can burn anything out connecting it as above, but it is not likely to work properly either.

Thanks Richard & Robb!  I essentially had the right idea and figured the 4.7k mod would be needed but wanted some confirmation.
