Marantz 671 Panning

can you pan with the marantz 671?  i couldnt find any pan controls, i figured it would record to two seperate tracks and then pan with some audio software...

Not exactly sure what you are asking, but the 670/671 gain control has the left channel on the outer ring, and the right on inner knob for control of L/R balance when recording live. If you need to correct the pan of the raw file, just about any audio software will allow you to make whatever pan adjustments to the wave file you want to make.

I am running some tests now...

The L/R gain knob controls the gain, but has no effect on panning...

When i transfered the files to my macbook it was already converted into one wav file, not a left file and a right file.  so i don't think you can drop that in a audio software and pan there...

I have gone through the presets.

Again, If the 671 converts to a single wav file automatically you are s-o-l here.  what are the methods people use?  surely this wouldn't be a popular recorder for music if it was limited to this.

So i guess a more direct question would be:  can you offload to your harddrive a channel one AND channel two?  and then swap, pan, etc. with software?  that would work, atleast for now...

You can separate the stereo file into two mono files in most editing software.

Left and right will look almost identical unless there is some huge difference in gain between them. Wavelab, Audacity, Soundforge, and others allow a stereo wave file to be split into mono files. It's very easy. Typically, the feature of recording mono files in field recorders is something you will only see with 4+ channel recorders, such as the Sound Devices 744 and 788 recorders and the Edirol R4 and R44, as well as the new Tascam 680.

OK.  I've been recording mostly with a laptop so I set up two mono tracks and pan them accordingly.

I can't help but to think that you are leaving something out or we are missing something here... I've read your other posts about this issue and what you are saying doesn't quite add up.

So, let's talk about the basics...
I'm assuming you are using two microphones and are trying to make a stereo recording of a live performance. That is what the majority of folks here are doing.
So, one microphone goes into the right channel and the other goes into the left channel. Each mic has it's own channel. Your recorder makes a stereo (2 channel file) with one mic on one channel and the other mic on the second channel. Unless you want to blend the two mics together there is no need for panning.

Even if you want to level match the two channels, you would just raise or lower the volume on the individual channels.

Can you explain in more detail what you want to achieve?

Ah, OK, that makes more sense!
You get the stereo image by the way you set-up your microphones. If you pan together two tracks you can collapse the stereo image, but you can't really make it wider after the fact. I know there are some DAW plug-ins that claim to do that, but I haven't heard one yet that works better than using proper micing technique from the start.

Some advanced techniques like mid-side recording allow you to adjust the width of a recording after the fact.
That would be something you can look into.
There is plenty of information about that here if you do a search.

I'm a Mac user myself although on ProTools at the moment and the system will often just load stereo files as dual mono which then need to be panned for playback...

yeah, this is what i am getting at... is single wav file the marantz produces a "summed mono track (2 mono tracks)" and you go into some software to pan to stereo or is it already a panned stereo file?
