Edirol R-09HR or Roland R-05?
« on: February 01, 2011, 08:32:49 PM »
They both cost about the same; at B&H, the Edirol, at $259, is ten clams more than the Roland.  So, which should I get?  I only record voice.  I often use MP3.  I have first gen R-09 but have worn it out; the pause switch recently fell off, etc etc.  Also, I only use the on-board mics.

I know many people have moved to the Sony but I bought one once, really didn't like it, and returned it.

So, what do you say: roland or ed?

tia!

I dunno, the R-09HR and R-05 look basically the same.  And Edirol is a Roland brand, and soon to be defunct.  If you're doing a lot of mp3 recording (and I assume you're not using external mics), then probably either will suit you fine and neither will likely make a noticeable difference from the other.

Thanks.  And that being the case, I think I'll go w/ the Edirol.  For one thing, the Roland has the power and hold buttons combined, which given my twitchy fingers worries me, and the Edirol has them separate.  bueno.

Think you'll find the battery life on the Roland is way better than on the Edirol

yeah, there is that battery life thing.  but i've been using Ultimate Lithiums on my old r09 and it hasn't been a problem.

Definitely.

My R-09 would run for about 5.5h. The R-09HR will give you at least 7h. (I used 2700mAh rechargeables. YMMV.)
Either way, battery life hasn't been an issue for me since the DAT days...  ;D

When compared, IIRC the R-09HR can take a hotter signal going line in than the R-05. This might be a non-issue for you, but it can affect the resale value in the taper community if you ever want to move on.
This brochure gives a good overview if you want to compare further:
