Sample rate problem and question.
« on: February 03, 2011, 10:25:42 PM »
So someone transferred a DAT and upped it to my archive but there is a problem with the tape. The tape runs very fast. I am guessing during the process of transferring, lets say the DAT tape was recorded at 44.1 kHZ but the soundcard they used was set at 48 kHZ during the transfer. They converted the file to 44.1 and it runs very fast.

I run on a mac so there is not a very fast way to edit a sample rate. So basically what I did was go into audacity and I changed the files rate to 40000 because that is what the song actually runs at the right speed at. I save the file and go into soundbooth and I save the file at 44.1 kHZ.

My next question is this... Would fixing it this way ruin the recording? What I mean by that is not all the sample rate is there? Should they just re-transfer it to get the best possible rate?

Thanks for reading.

There is a small loss of quality going the way you did. Not much but still.

Beeing a computer hacker I think I know what went wrong and how to fix it. The digital recording ran at 48k, but was wrongly labeled as 44.1k .  The hacker solution I would use to find a program that could modify the file marking to the correct value. This i single marking right in the beginning od the file. I have seen some programs that might help you there. Cannot remember if they are available for the mac though.

The WAV header sample rate and actual data sample rate are probably different.  This is not uncommon and should be an easy fix.  Check the sticky at the top of the forum for solutions.
