Way long ago (20+ years) when I recorded "stealth" it was with a Sony D6 cassette with the Sennheiser K3U/ME80 "short shotgun" hypercardioid combination. This was always done mono, with very pleasing results. Of course, it was always dependent on proximity and environment. Nothing will ever fix a boomy, chatty, glass breaking barroom environment. Let others weigh in on this. The mic is long out of production, but seem to be all over the ebay / craigslist / used outlet sources. Google info is plentiful. Batteries are available (PX23), or run on phantom, and I'm not certain on how low the voltage can go.
I've also used the Nak 300's recently with the M10. I was not disappointed. Again, the Nak's seem to be available on a regular basis on ebay, often with the CP4 shotgun caps. I think there is currently a set available for $400 - 3 mics with CP1, CP2, and 2 CP4's. I ran mic input with fresh batteries, also easily obtained for about $6 each. Google Nak 300 batteries will lead you to the source.
