I'm building a box from scratch and matching mics to it, and I'm thinking of using this setup.
does it mean if I wire my mics I wire to this connector, are they dedicated to this jack only...
or is it still a universal mini jack connection ?

Your cable end with likely be stuck with only being able to mate with a similar threaded jack, as that thread would form a shroud that becomes a clearance issue.

If you're stuck with special connectors you've got other options in circular panel mount, I would recommend for quick mating but also latch locking there are circulars
that lock in place via either a Push/Pull, Latch Lock or Bayonete style latching systems.  THey're not barrel audio type connectors, but three pin connectors.

The connector is wired as normal. If you have mics that have screw locks on them, you would insert and then screw, otherwise that doesn't help you.

What are your mics terminated in? Pic?

The mics currently have a right angle neutrik mini jack.

The solution is a dongle that has a Female Locking on one end and Regular Male on the other end.  That way, you can use your locking on a non-locking without any problem.

You could make one with a soldering iron...  Just buy the parts...

I see you're in RVA...

Go find an electrical engineer at VT to do your soldering if you don't want to deal.  Honestly, as a Taper you should learn how to solder, so you can make your own cables.  Its a good skill to have.

I'm look at the image of the male 3.5mm connector, and it looks like the threaded sleeve has room to go up and not get in the way of a reg. 3.5mm connection.

I agree with all that, I just had trouble visualizing how that would work with a normal jack on the male end. Maybe I'm just reading the description wrong. I mean, my 901 had a deathgrip on the plug, but that's not what you're referencing.

Correct, you can use normal non-locking connectors on it just fine. (I use the headphone out of my usbpre2 that way).

The ring does push back and you can get a male locking to female regular connection, although I wouldn't rely on it (especially without tape to hold it in place)

why would it be any different than a reg. 3.5mm connection ?
It would seem that it would have a solid connection...the connector would just have a skirt.
It's either in or not in.
Unless they made the shaft smaller or narrower.
But then it wouldn't have a secure connection even with the correct mate.
It should be adhering to the 'standardized' size.

I don't see why this wouldn't work well on all 3.5mm female connections. (without the threaded mating)

The ring doesn't quite recede enough so it's about 1mm (maybe less) away from being fully inside the socket, although the connections still seems to work ok.  I've also only used these with mono lavelier mics, so stereo/balanced mics may not work (although ring and tip were both attached to the shield)
