Heeeelp!!!! i don´t know how to fix clipping
« on: April 08, 2011, 08:36:18 PM »

Hi,

Really I need your help, I have a Preamp CA9200, I recorded a concert of one of my favourites band, deftones in lollapalooza festival in Chile, but I didn´t checked that the gain of the preamp was very high, so I got a lot of clipping in my recording :'( :'( :'( :'(, this is a sample:

Is threre any way to fix it, I tried using izotope rx, normalizing, etc... I read that isn´t too much to do, but this recording is very special so I want to try to save it, or reduce the problem.

Please I any help will be appreciated.

Best Regards

did you reduce the gain on the file in post before encoding it to mp3? It's peaking at about -15 or -10db right now and I'm not sure what you have is digital clipping as much as overloading of a recorder or analog distortion in general (both after listening to it and looking at it in izotope and audacity).

yeah, Im guessing what you have is analog overload, not digital clipping so using a clip restoration tool won't touch that. Only thing I think has potential is using Izotope's Decrackle plugin with a value of high and a strength around 6, and use a skew value that's positive, say around 4. I didn't play around with it a lot to fine tune that, but that's a start and yielded a result which was less-bad, but not good by any metric. What that will do is eliminate that electricity sound that is prominent with really loud sounds at the expense of some brightness. I won't resolve the over compressed effect or any of the other problems. There is definately no quick fix, if one at all. Best of luck.
