I've been asked to record someone at a jazz club in NYC. I will be seating front and center. I will be using my Church microphones and church preamp along with a Sony PCMD50 recorder. What should I consider to get the best recording? Since I have the okay to record the set, should I place the mics on the stage or somewhere else to get the best recording?
Yes it is a jazz club. It is a quintet and there will be a PA. I am using the CAFS mics that Church sells.

Taped to eye glasses just above the ear facing towards the action. Gain on the preamp to 90%

I usually have it at 100 and then adjust the preamp gain. If what you suggest is better, what should I have the Sony set to in terms of gain?
