ya thats what i meant with superlux- i want to tape bands such us umphreys, railroad earth, littlefeat etc, usually in smaller venues, with the occasional furthur/phish show in a large venue- i dont have a rig yet, just starting out

From that bunch I would go with the Audio Technicas

The Samson and the MXL are marginal at best.  Never heard the Superlux

As other have stated though, there are definitely lots more options in this general price range.

akg perception 170's as another option (99$ each):

I think the perception 170`s are sounding good so far, here is a sample, they are not as bright as others in this price point (still a tad but not as bad)

What about the Church Audio mini-mics? I was AMAZED at how great they sounded the 1st time I used them

Karma k10 is an amazing pair if mics for the price...  the church mics and at853 are nice but don't have nearly the low end response of the karmas....
