Planning to upgrade
« on: August 05, 2011, 10:25:37 PM »
I'm looking for suggestions for a mic upgrade and thought this would be the best place to ask. My current rig is CSB-BB with switchable filter-R09 and I've made some good and some not-so-good recordings over the last 5 years. I'm thinking another omni setup would be best as I'm doing primarily stealth recording, but I'm looking for something with a brighter and more detailed sound.

My initial thought was to go with a dpa 4060 or 4061, but after doing some reading on this board I'm now considering a Countryman B3- Naiant TinyBox pairing as this would fit well within my budget of $1000. Any thoughts on this setup? I'd like to use minijack connectors on everything and I'm wondering where to go to find the mics already set up this way, preferably as a matched pair. Oh, and I'd like to be able to get it within about two weeks. I'd appreciate any recommendations as I haven't made a decision yet!
Mics: Nevaton MCE400 / Naiant X-S
Pre: Tinybox v1.5
Recorders: Sony M10 / Edirol R09
Video: Canon HF M50

If I was going to get a mini. mic. pair, personally, I would go for the DPA stereo kit.

I've owned the DPA's and currently run Nevaton MCE400's > Tinybox.

Even if cost was no object, I would go with the Nevaton's over the DPA's (if those were my 2 choices). I have heard people say the same about the Countryman's (vs. the DPA's).

From what I understand the Nevaton's are slightly more directional, which can help cut down own close talkers in stealth situations.

I think you can have the Countryman's terminated to a mini XLR that will go straight into the Tinybox which will make for a pretty small rig.

The Nevaton's require that you keep the regular sized XLR's on them so you'd have to run a pigtail mini XLR to Female XLR (x2) to connect to the Nevatons. Larger, but I have no issues running this.

Can't go wrong with the DPA's. I loved them, but I just don't think they are worth the extra money, and like I said, I like the less expensive Nevaton's over them regardless of $$$.

The Nevaton's just sound more full to me.

If the OP goes the Countryman B3 route and has the pair terminated in a 1/8" stereo plug, wouldn't another option be to run them off a 9v battery box as opposed to using a Tinybox?  Figured it couldn't hurt to suggest another alternative.

x2 for the DPA 4061 route...I love mine.  They can be found for a lot cheaper on ebay and craigs list from time to time than buying direct from a audio supplier FWIW.  I got my pair  of 4061s off eBay for $200 shipped and paid another $20 to re-terminate to 1/8" connector.  They happened to be matched within  0.6dB of each other too as a bonus!  :)

If you want a brighter sounding recording I agree that the DPA's are the way to go.

If you want a smoother, warmer and less ear-fatiguing sounding recording though...you may want to consider Mike B's suggestion.
