Topic: anyone ever recable ca-11 mics?

i seem to have a frayed wire in the right channel of my ca11s.  does anyone on here have experience recabling these?  ive sent the off to the manufacturer for the issue before but i would like to learn on my own.

also, i store the mics by clipping the caps together and wrapping the wires around my hand, then placing in their box.  maybe there is something i am doing wrong during use and storage.  i was hoping someone on here might have some input.

I had a set that had damaged cables about mid-length. I cut them short and resoldered a new miniplug onto the end. Needless to say, the wires inside the cable are hair thin.

There are pro sound guys who swear by over-under, and there are those who swear at over-under. Probably the best method in general is to gently roll/unroll cable from a reel.

Yeah, the positive aspect of over/under is less about cable stress and more about not twisting the cable into a spiral so it spools-off cleanly and lays flat when unwound instead of wanting to curl up.  The negative aspect of over/under, and it is a big one unless you figure a way to manage it, is that you have to keep the ends from accidentally passing through the main cable loops or else you get a huge mess of knots next time you play out the cable.

I use both.  I typically overhand coil short cables that can be untwisted easily, and over/under long ones that would be hard to manage. On the over/unders I make sure to connect the ends or tie them off in such a way that the'll be no chance of a resulting macrame/fishline type mess.

Those orange plastic hand-held reels for outdoor power cables work well for a few long XLRs, just a bit bulky.

Yeah, I've heard of guys using garden hose reels and daisychaining all their XLRs together . . .

Yep - thats what we use for the rare road show - garden hose reel with about 30 mic cords wound on - just connect next XLR to the last...

Do you have soldering skills? Tools?

no tools or skills in that department but i could obtain access if needed.  not sure if it would be worth the hassle.  did you have any luck with that method?
