Hello Tapers!
« on: November 21, 2011, 02:13:57 AM »
Hello Tapers

Allow me to apologize if I posted this in the wrong section. I did look for a "general" category but failed.

Hello from Lydenburg, South Africa! I have been dabbling with recording, especially binaural recording techniques for quite some time.

Looking forward to engaging in discussion on this forum.

Here you can listen to a small sample of a recording I have done a while ago in my local church: http://soundcloud.com/machineghost/die-koekoek-en-die-nagtegaal-h and here: http://soundcloud.com/machineghost/missa-brevis-sancti-benedictus

Welcome to TS. I love binaural recordings so I will check out your soundcloud links!
Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.

I'm only listening at work on cheap computer speakers, but the recording sounds beautiful on those.  I'm also curious what mics you're using (and what kind of j-disc for that matter).

Thanx for the welcome guys!

Those binaural recordings of mine is nothing special actually. I used a pair of dirt-cheap (slightly modded) Beringer C-2 cardioid pencil mics on a 12" Jecklin disc. Using a cardioid on a Jecklin I have found that I get a more focussed binaural image like one would listening live. Interface is a Steinberg MI4 into Cubase.

I have my eyes on some Pearl condenser microphones...

Only problem with the above posted recording is that the conductor was a bit "loud"

Nice. A buddy uses a J-disk with great results. I've been using an omni bar with a 3ft (~91 cm) spacing to get a stereo image. To my ears the disk often sounds better, but it can block sightlines at concerts.

I was in Stellenbosch last year. Are you close?

Whoza! Stellenbosch is over 1500 kilometers away from where I live. I live in the upper part of South Africa...

Those recordings really sound good. It's hard to record in a church-often you pick up too much room noise-people breathing, squeaking seats, etc.

Didn't know a Jecklin was any benefit with cards, but it seems to work.

I think the C-2's are underrated, especially for the money. Nothing but rave reviews on the net except for here on taperssection. Musicians seem to love them. I got a pair because they were so cheap (under $60 with a stereo bar & clips) so small and many positive reviews. Used them once so far and the recording came out quite well.

Agree - but they do have a small bit of a peak that is not kind to all types of recordings.

Yes - who said you cannot use cardioids with a Jecklin?  >:D
