New Mic Alert - ADK Thor
« on: December 24, 2011, 11:59:12 AM »
Nothing on their website yet.  But I saw some YouTube videos....cant attach those from work.  Its looking like a sweet mic.  Not quite a replacement for the TL, but close.  I like some of the additional features the mic has that the TL did not.   Looks like the mic is going to come in around 400$ US.  Should be released in Feb 2012.

Larry Villella discussing three new microphones.
Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.

I had a talk with Larry a couple months ago and the Thor is the answer to the discontinued TL.  He is excited about it.  Has anyone every run the 3 ZIgma Chi mics yet?  I would really really like to get a set to try out.

My thoughts exactly...I was bummed when they discontinued the TL's......they are getting a little hard to find used.  People know what they have and are holding on to them.  I am very excited about the Thor....I will probably pick up a pair.  I miss having a set of LD's.

I have wondered about the 3Zigma mics as well.  Seems like they would make great mics for our purpose.  They also seem reasonably priced.

No hypercardioid pattern like the TL has though.  I fing myself using the figure-8 and hyper patterns on the TLs most often.

[edit- to clarify, that's not because I don't like those patterns on the TLs, but because I have other omnis and cardioids I use and don't have many others with hyper and figure-8 patterns.]

Regarding the 3 Zigma CHI mics, I have a complete set of them - pairs of eight different capsules, 6 transformerless mic amp bodies, etc.  They are quite nice.  The SD capsules (card, HCard, diffuse omni and free field omni) are pleasing sonically and have predictable behavior.  Noise is acceptable with the SDs.  The 4 different LDs (modeled after a 47, 67, C12 and 251) are quiet as a mouse and provide some interesting stereo instrument recordings, although they are primarily designed for vocals.

To go into a bit more detail with one capsule, the 3 Zigma CHI small diaphragm cardioid capsule sounds somewhere between a Schoeps CMC64 and a Neumann KM84, if that makes any sense.  It is not strident like a KM184.  It is more akin to a Joly modified Oktava MC-012.

I am sorry that I'm late to this discussion.

I just wanted to make a couple quick comments:

1) The ADK TL seems to have resonated with live tapers.  While THOR doesn't have
the Hyper-cardioid feature, what it does have is about 2dB less self-noise and about
15dB more headroom (up to 148dB @0.5% THD). It also has a Tone-Color control
for Mellow / Neutral / Brilliant high frequency response. THOR is a multi-colored mic!

2) For those of you who truly miss having a Hyper, the new 3 Zigma SD-H is - to
my mind - an amazing microphone.  Transformerless version has been on tour
with Jazz at Lincoln Center for over 3 years. The Transformer-Coupled version
can handle 156dB.   Main applications include Frets, Upright Bass, Snare & Kick.

Thanks for all your support for the ADK TL.  Hope you try some of our newer tools!

Musically yours,

Larry Villella, Founder, ADK Microphones - 3 Zigma Audio

Thanks for stopping in Larry!  Always cool to see the President of the company engaging in conversation.  Yes the TL hit a sweet spot with a lot of us here.  I am sure that if the past is any indication of the future the new mics will sound great.  I am dying to get some of the 3 Zigma tool kits, but like always it's about budget at the moment.  Now if I could just hit that powerball....Keep up the good work.  Oh and fwiw, I love every single one of the 10 ADK mics I own.  Some of which I doubt I will ever part with.
