Tascam DR-100 vs Zoom h4n vs Tascam DR-100 MKII
« on: January 18, 2012, 05:47:15 PM »
Hello guys

I'm looking to buy a digitarl recorder for around the price tag of this recorders.

I'll use them to record with my DSLR (Canon t3i/60D) most likely interviews with a lav mic (either 3.5mm or XLR) or short films with a shotgun mic (3.5mm/XLR).

But the built-in mic quality it's also important for voice and meetings/conventions recordings, since I'm not likely to have an external mic with me all the time.

So I'm looking here for 4 things:

1) Good internal mics with low noise floor

2) Good preamps for either 3.5mm or xlr external mics with low noise/hiss

3) Good battery life

4) The ability to use, lets say, 2 xlr lav mics

I certainly chose these 3 recorders for their price tag and the XLR inputs

Any other suggestions with arguments would be greatly appreciated

Thanks a lot!

if you already have XLR mics the Tascam should be the choice.

The DR100(mk2) has 2 battery compartments with hot swap and can run on power supply also.

Maybe the DR-40 fits also? Reasonable price, long run time on P48 (but expect no wonders - around 2 hours), but an external battery pack and AC Power supply is also availiable for it.

But your the same like asked for the lecture recorder. Maybe the Dr100 is the bill you can switch between card/ omni internal mics on that one.
2015 rig: CA-11 -> CA-9100 -> PCM-M10
2016 rig: Sony PCM-M10 + SP-SPSB-4 microphone plug-in power supply +  SP-CMC8 with Low Sens mod
[backup: CA-9100 - Tascam DR-05 Firmware 2.0 + Yamaha Pocketrak W24]
video 2016: Casio EX-100 HS (same as Olympus Stylus1 - but much smaller - japan import not availiable in EU)

Thanks I was leaning towards the Tascam DR-100 MKII and yes I'm the one about the lecture recorder, but this thing is waaaaayy too bulky and well something like the sony pcm m10 is nice and small, and since I plan on doing pro recordings with this I'll just take it away from home just when neccesary

Fatc the tascam looks bigger on the pictures as it is in natural ... its not that bigger than the m10, but lots more features.

And it don't looks like you want to "htlaets"  ;D the size of the unit shouldn't be the point in the decision.

I'm also interested in this.  If you don't want to upgrade in the near future would the dr100mkII be the best choice?
