using the naiant pfa with the tascam dr100 mk2..
« on: February 02, 2012, 11:25:34 AM »
man i'll bet this is basic, but when i'm using the pfa with my tascam dr100 mk2, switch set to mic - will it drain the batteries as fast as with mics requiring 48v phantom just because phantom is activated, or is it just using 9-ish volts for a slower drain?

P48 microphones will have differing current draws. Some draw 2-3 mA while others draw 6-8 (or up to 10). The PFA is probably only drawing 2-3, but Jon would have to confirm.

Your battery life will be consistent with a p48 microphone that is on the low-end of current draw, so it will be good, but it will not be as if you are only drawing 9vs. The recorder is still supplying 48v to the PFA.

Thanks.  I guess my question was (maybe slightly more succinctly) just about battery life using the PFA with say, plug in power mics (CA-14) vs. any true phantom powered mics plugged into the XLR inputs instead.  I bought the PFA mostly because, ideally, my portable stealthy set up would be tidier without adding a battery box, but since then I've been thinking about how my run time would be affected.  Not a huge deal, as I ordered a battery box from Chris also; just wondering what kind of difference I should expect between the two.  I am also just home from having a tooth pulled and am on Oxycodone.  It has taken me like six hours just to type this in a way that makes sense to my bleary eyes and warped brain!  ;D :-\ ^-^ :D
