Mister Would You Please Help My D8?
« on: February 28, 2012, 08:45:12 PM »
It's over there there behind the tree ;D

OK seriously, I recently found my long lost (been in a box for ~2 years) Sony D8. When I play a tape in it there's a noticeable whirring/clicking sound coming from it. I assume it needs to be serviced but am curious if anyone has any idea what could be causing it and how much a service call might run and where I might get it serviced? I can record the sound and post it if anyone thinks that will help. TIA.

Awesome. David said you were like The Wolf in Pulp Fiction. Shows up just in time with tons of gear, does a pro job, and disappears into the night! :-)

Try giving Pro Digital a call and see what they recommend.  They quoted me a repair price of something like $250 for my D8 when it started eating tapes and shutting off spontaneously.  I retired it at that point by throwing it away and getting a D50.

Yikes :o

Thanks for the intel. Can't really picture myself spending that much to repair a D8, but good to know who to call. +T

I have sent decks into Pro Digital before and the bill was never cheap, but the service was great.

I had them refurb my D8 and it was $200.
The D8 was built to last, according to paul (or was it tom?) and if you want to keep recording on DAT, the D8 will serve you better than the M1 or D100.
I have not used my D8 much since they serviced it, but it still works like a champ whenever i do, and I love it like a little brother that I would leave home when i go to the concert because he would just get in the way.

You can have him for $200 if you want him.
I just had Pro-Dig service 3 M1's which I could not stand to see sitting around collecting dust on the plastic bags they were housed in. Each one was $200 in service alone, so unless you need that 7-pin in that DAT provides, I think you would be better served buying a different recording option.

That said, you can have any of my recently-serviced M1's for $250.

;-)
once again, lost in all the noise

For the cost of service you might as well grab a Sony M10 and retire the D8!

If I wanted a small deck for field recording, I'd be all over the M10. But it won't play back old DAT tapes :)
