Been a long time since I posted here... I've recently gotten a new home computer and when I was reloading my software, I found out that my Soundforge 6.0 won't work on a Windows 7 machine.  I'm going to be transferring some more vinyl and I previously used Sound Forge to get rid of the occasional pops on the recordings.  Is there other software that you recommend to do this that is freeware... or "cheap" ware?

To clarify... I'm not using Sound Forge for recording.  Just editing of wav files.  My recording flow is... Linn Sondek LP12 (Ittok arm, Benz micro cartridge) > Linn Wakonda preamp > Marantz PMD-671.  Sometimes using my PCM-R500 as an A>D...

That is strange.  I have W7 Home Pr5emium (64 bit) and Soundforge 6.0e Build 237 works perfectly.  In fact, I ditched v8 in favour of the older one.

iZotope RX or RX 2.  Not really cheap, unless you want to go the underground route.

iZotope RX2 / RX2 Advanced are great tools but far from inexpensive. They do however offer a $39 alternative solution for your application called Music and Speech Cleaner.  Haven't used it myself but you can download a trial mode version for free and purchase a license if you like it.

With a good playback chain like that, I would use nothing at all, unless you are tediously hand redrawing the occassional big pops or transferring something super rare and super beat.   That said, my favorite software is Diamondcut.

I've used Click Repair as a standalone software for this, and like it a lot.  I work on Mac, but it looks like they have both Mac and PC versions:

21-day trial period, and after that $40-45 (depending on how the US$ is compared to the Australian $).
