PMD-661 Super Mod
« on: May 02, 2012, 02:16:54 PM »
Is there a simple answer to the following;

Does it make any sense to have a Oade Super modded PMD-661 for relatively loud rock concerts?  I know it is geared up for "low level" recording, but does that mean it does a poor job in a loud concert setting?
Neumann KM-140,Church Audio Ca-14, Card Omni, CAD e70

Edirol UA-5 (T+ mod), Church Audio CA-9200, M148

Tascam DR2D, Marantz PMD 660 (Oade Songcatcher)

The super mod is designed for ambient recording, nature, foley, etc. It's preamps don't have even close to the same headroom for loud sources that the concert and warm mods have. Loud concert sound will overload the super mod. The noise floor is lower on the super mod, so it surpasses the other mods on SNR. Each of the mods are geared towards specific applications, as explained on the Oade's website.

I have the Supermod because I mostly record nature sounds, but occasionally record shows. It works just fine with a -10 pad on my mics (AT4021s) and -18 setting for the input attenuation. Some of the shows have been quite loud (Dinosaur Jr. for  example) and no problems. Not to say it is ideal for loud shows, but in the right circumstances it seems fine.
