Topic: Newbie needs help with CA-11

i have got the

sony-pcm-m10
CA-11 cardioid mics
CA-9100 preamp

today i checked my new mics. the right mic is recording much louder than the left one, about 10 dB. is the mic defect?

Have you unscrewed the cap to be sure there isn't something wrong with the contact between the capsule and the rest of the mic?

yes i did and i can´t see any problem

Are you sure the cables are fully seated in the input connections?  Sometimes a connector needs to be fully seated or you'll get signal loss.   Both mics > preamp and preamp  > recorder

Have you tried plugging the mics in directly to the M-10 (mic-in, not line-in) to see if it is the mics or the preamp?  Have you tried plugging headphones into the output of the preamp to see if it is the M-10?

the reason is not the preamp, not the recorder and the cable seats very exactly in the input.

switch the left and right capsules. The capsules are ALWAYS matched to the fet. So the fet could be weak and and the capsule strong making a perfect match in the end. ALSO check to make sure the brass tab is bent up and meeting the center pin of the capsule. On both mics. you can look in the side vent to see if its ok. Also you have to understand that you do not have the equipment to measure the capsules properly for balance so some of this discrepancy is going to be the way you are trying to see if they are matched.

doesn't the sony pcm unit have separate level adjustments?  i know you said it wasn't the recorder but i thought i would throw that out there.  if the mics are working at all they should have the same levels.

Nope! The M10 just has a L/R gain switch and CANNOT adjust Left/Right levels separately
