Looking for advice on a stand extension
« on: July 01, 2012, 03:34:28 PM »
I have a 10' Calumet/Manfrotto 004BAC stand, the stud at the top is pictured.  I have a threaded adapter on it that's pretty much stuck (I've tried to loosen it with WD-40) that I use for my bar (see picture).  I'm looking for about another 3' at the top.  Any suggestions on how to do this?

rapid adaptor (terminating in 3/8th-16thread) > either a manfrotto 099b or a manfrotto 237HD

I like the looks of that 099b... it says that has a 5/8" thread on the bottom though... so do I still need that adapter?

i have the 237hd which required the 3/8th and I was guessing on the 099b.

If it requires a 5/8th then as long as you're existing thread on the adaptor isn't crossthreaded, then you're good to go.

Sounds good... now the question is, will this all be stable enough, given the way my stand is typically set up for DMB (zip-tied to the seat)...

Actually, the Manfrotto 099b has a 5/8" threaded stud only at the top like your stand, but the bottom has a socket which will fit over your stand's stud; no Rapid Adapter required.  However, since you have that adapter stuck to the top of your stand that could be an issue.  Just tested it on my 099b with a similar 3/8 to 5/8" adapter; while the threads of the adapter fit into the socket of the extension, that rim along the base of it will not fit and you won't be able to seat it properly or at all.  I think you'll have the same issue trying to fit a Rapid Adapter over it.

One way or another I believe you will have to get that adapter off your stand's top stud if you want to use an extension.  Maybe use a pair of vice-grip wrenches after another shot of WD-40: one to grip the frozen adapter, one to grip the stud.  It's also a good idea to use a Rapid Adapter instead of threading your stereo bar directly to the top of the stand to minimize an issue like this (ie: stuck/frozen threaded adapter).

BTW, the 099b is a great piece of hardware and I use mine quite a bit.  As far as the stability of zip-tying 13 feet of stand to a seat... personally, I would use a lot of zip ties. ;D

That would be my concern.  I've seen a lot of stands that are kinda sketchy fully extended on their own.  Adding an extension on top of that?  I wouldn't do it.  I'd go for a bigger stand.

You could try some lithium grease.  It worked when WD-40 didn't to loosen up some super tight articulating arms on a TV wall mount.

Thanks for the tip on the vise-grip wrench -- sprayed a good bit of WD-40, grabbed the adapter with the pliers, held the base of the stand, turned, and it came right off...

Now to get a rapid adapter, and decide if the stand extension is a good idea, or pushing it.

Cool.  Glad to hear that you were able to get the adapter off.

You could always use some sort of concentrated flame on that adapter too and heat it up. Then once it's heated, it will expand and become loose, but try to loosen it while it's still hot. Holding that adapter against something hot long enough will do it too, then just use some vise grips or pliers to spin it off once it's looser.  ;)

Yeah, Id heat it up and THEN try to take it off. That worked a few months ago when I bought all new 1/4">5/8" adapters on my stands. So now ALL my clamps/shocks have 1/4" threads on them, so I can use ANY of my 100 clamps :P ;D

I did wind up buying the Manfrotto extension and a rapid adapter.  I was back and forth between the Manfrotto and the Matthews baby extension, went with the Manfrotto after seeing a few people say their Matthews extension had rings snapping.

Very nearly bought a super clamp, a Manfrotto 203 arm, and a safety cable in the same purchase, in case I find myself in some odd clamping situations.  But I decided to hold off for now...
