Topic: Need deck and cable suggestions for soundboard patching, please

a guy i know on another forum has reached out and asked for recommendations.

i immediately suggested the Sony M-10 and that he sign up here for a plethora of people willing to help and possibly sell him some gear.  admittedly, i'm not too versed on the Sony, i just know a lot of people love it.

in an ideal world, of course, if you want to SBD patch it'd also be nice to have a couple of mic channels available - so that would point you to the DR-2D, or to just run internals, the Roland R-26.

If I were really only taking SBD patches and nothing else, I would want something with XLR inputs.  I believe (correct me if I am wrong) those inputs are usually less hot than the line-level input on a deck like the M10, which would almost certainly require attenuator cables.  With a deck with XLR inputs, you can simply buy one set of XLR cables with 1/4" and RCA adapters, and you're good for any situation.  The Tascam DR-40 seems like a good bet at $200, XLR in, plus can add the internals for 2 mic channels.

wait...  does the Tascam DR-40 have the ability to do a sbd/external mic (via xlrs) matrix on the fly, or not?

Nope.  Only has 2 external inputs but it can do mic/line in plus internal mics.

Nope.  Only has 2 external inputs but it can do mic/line in plus internal mics.

My vote would be for the DR-2D. The dual recording feature is it's greatest asset.
I regularly record 2 separate channels, external mic-in and SBD line in and matrix them in post. You can also matrix them on the fly but I like to do the side-by-side comparison before I matrix them.
So far I have only needed the RCA > 1/8' Line In from out of the SBD, but did just run into a XLR situation I was not prepared for so I will need to start using that as well.
Where I do not get a patch, I still record in dual mode, one recording at my desired input level as well as one at a lower level as a fail-safe.
