DR100mkii DIN Unlock problems?
« on: August 15, 2012, 01:49:10 AM »
Anybody had DIN Unlock problems w/ the DR100mkii?  I've read it's potentially due to the spdif signal coming into it not being to spec.  I got the unit about a month and a half ago.  I recorded twice plugging in straight to the XLR's, once with a UA-5 at 16/44.1, no problems (only recorded for 45 mins).  Then once w/ a V3 at 16/44.1 for about an hour and a half w/ no problems.  Then again w/ a V3 the other day at 16/44.1 and after 20-30 mins I noticed the recording had stopped and I had a "DIN Unlock" on the screen.  So I restarted the recording and everything went fine for the rest of the show (about an hour).  It's possible I just bumped it by accident and shut it off, but that would not explain the DIN Unlock.

Ideas?

I think the DR100mkii issues have been with locking, not unlocking.

Sounds more like a bad cable, or as you said, you may be bumped or jiggled something.

An aside - I think we've discovered that the UA5 has never put out 16 bits - always 24, regardless of what has been said here in the past.

I had some Din Unlock issues with the DR 100mkII as I was setting up for a show. For me it was a bad S/PDIF cable and I have since replaced the cable. If I jiggled it, It would unlock but as I recall it would relock with more jiggling, I did not have to start or stop or re-start the deck. And yes if it is incompatible with a device you get the exact same message, but because this was not your issue, I would suspect the S/PDIF cable but perhaps it may have been a temporary loss of power to the V3 with its power cable being jiggled? Hard to say but you may want to try to recreate the problem focusing on those two areas and see what happens.

Thanks for the tips.  I'll take a look at the SPDIF cable.  The battery was in such a position that neither it nor the battery cable cable could have been bumped.  I had some issues w/ the original cable I got w/ the V3 but this one seems to be behaving fine, so I doubt that's it.  I also didn't notice the V3 turn off.  I'll see if I can play w/ jiggling the spdif cable this weekend and see what happens.  I'm also used to the MT2496 where I can put it in hold mode and still have the backlight turn on.  From what I've seen w/ this recorder, if it's in hold the backlight won't come on if I press a button, so I also didn't have it in hold mode.
