Anyone here ever run a pair? I have an opportunity to pick up a vintage set. Thanks for any and all feedback. These are the vintage ones with transformers.

I have used these mics and they sound wide open and fantastic. Remember these are electret microphones and will lose gain over time.
Given the fact that the diaphrams are small and already have fairly high self noise this might be something to consider. I am not trying
to dissuade you from buying them but I would definitely want to try them first.

Don't worry about the fact they're electrets. B&K writes the loss is 1db in 400 years...
I have a vintage pair of these. Fantastic mics. I only use them for acoustic sources, though.
HUGE bass response. Clear mids and top range.
I can recommend to buy them!

I just pulled the trigger. They came with the normal grids and the black free field grids. Have ya'll tried the black ones before? there also seems to be a cone shaped grid as well (not included in my set) has anyone tried them?

I have not, love to though, however I do know the nose cone shaped grids give them a completely uniform omni pattern without the typical directional response on-axis at high frequencies.

Congratulations, you won't regret.

The nose cone gives a similar response as the AKG CK22, makes it omni up to 20khz.
There's also a trapezoid grid for a ruler flat response like Schoeps MK2.
I don't own these grids, don't miss them. Have MK2 and CK22, though.  ;)
BTW: The black grids are for diffuse field, HF lift.
Silver ones are the free field grids.

I'd imagine the nose cone is used primarily for measurement purposes rather than music recording.

These are the two different grids that came with the 4006s

DD0251 Free-field Grid, Silver

The DD0251 is a Free-field Grid ideally suited for making all types of near-field recordings.

It is supplied as standard with the Standard Microphone DPA 4003 and 4006, the A-B Stereo Kits 3503 and 3506 and the Compact Microphone DPA 4051, 4052 and 4053, but can also be ordered separately.

With this grid fitted, your microphones will achieve optimum recording accuracy on-axis and exhibit neutral frequency responses across the audio range from 10 Hz to 20 kHz (±2 dB) close to the sound source.

DD0297 Diffuse-field Grid, Black

The DD0297 is a microphone protection grid ideally suited for making all types of far-field recording
It is supplied as standard with the Standard Microphone Types 4003 and 4006, the A-B Stereo Kits 3503 and 3506 and the Compact Microphone Types 4051, 4052 and 4053, but can also be ordered separately. With this grid fitted, your microphone will achieve a linear diffuse-field response up to 15 kHz.

In the near-field, the on-axis response has a 6 dB boost at 15 kHz. At intermediate distances, you can orient your microphone at a "grazing angle" of incidence to the sound source to give a normal response to direct sound while brightening up reflective sound.

and was thinking about getting the cone to round out the set but not sure what I would use them for. I guess aiming them up while inside the middle of a string band perhaps.

UA0777 Nose Cone

The Nose Cone UA0777 is specially designed for use with the Standard Microphones 4003 and 4006, the A-B Stereo Kits 3503 and 3506 and the Compact Microphones Types 4051, 4052 and 4053.

It will give your microphone a perfect omnidirectional response across the whole audio frequency range. It counteracts the directional characteristics that omnidirectional microphones exhibit at higher frequencies, and guarantees an even tonal balance of sound arriving at all angles of incidence, but with a high-frequency boost on-axis.

This nose cone is especially suitable for increasing the ambiance to your recordings, or for miking a variety of sound sources that are positioned around the microphone.

Yeah, though in most cases the diffuse cap pointed straight up would probably work just as well for that.  I guess one way of thinking of the cone is that it makes the response very similar to that of their miniature omnis (the polar looks almost identical to the 406x) but with the better specs of the 4006.

I ran them onstage split 12' at Tipitinas. they cut right though the boominess of the room and were nice and detailed through the mids/highs.

Which grids and which way did you point 'em?

I used the DD0251 Free-field Grid, Silver and pointed them in towards the drum set. It was a matrix so I mixed them with the L&R from the sbd. sounds fantastic. George Porter jr and his runnin pardners were the backing band for a slew of piano players. It was a benefit to restore the home of Professor Longhair and the following played:
Ed Volker
John Cleary
Ellis Marsalis
Dr. John
