Topic: Transporting and protecting mk4v's in bag

Looking for ideas on how to protect my mk4v's attached to active cables whilst in transit.

I know the old drill a notch in a 35mm film canister lid trick for the MK4/41's. But 35mm film cans are too short to house my mk4v's and the collette connector.

I'm travelling with the 4v's via airline for the first time since I purchased them. I usually just throw the stock B5's on when transporting to shows within driving distance.

I plan on taking the rig on the plane as carry-on. I've seen the shit people try to cram in the over head compartments. I think I need something more robust to protect the capsules. I want to leave the rig as assembled as possible to avoid TSA issues.

Right now I'm thinking some pipe insulation like I use on the mic bodies but would prefer a hard shell of some sort.

Any thoughts?

tim, i have always used the caps on my active bar with screens on that and ive never had an issue, especially if ur carrying them on. trust me theyll b FINE!

If you'd prefer something a la the film canister method, you could always use some foam-lined PVC pipe or something similar.  PVC would be nice b/c you could cap it and hack it to whatever length you need.  The pelican/otter box method would also work but I'm not too keen on drilling into otherwise watertight boxes.

I recently took some probiotic pills (the new ones by bayer) and container they came in may work - it's thicker aluminum with a plastic lid and taller then the 35mm canisters.

It may have a slightly smaller diameter though

I always put my gear under the seat for that reason.

I know that doesn't answer your question, but food for thought.

Traveled recently with my entire rig and had no issues with security either say. Everything taken apart, all capsules in their Schoeps canisters, etc. Security did do a hand check on the way there but that took about 2 minutes. Of course YMMV.

The Pelican and Otterbox cases get my vote, unless you really need something that much smaller.  Both of those manufacturers make great, durable cases that can take a lot of abuse and can keep your mics pretty well secured.  Been carrying my mics in them for years and I'm sold on 'em.

FWIW - When I used to fly to shows I never had my gear fully ready to run.  The more fragile components where packed away in the bag  (I.e. bodies in wooden box and caps in the viels)

i think its kinda overkill to do that H2O, but we spend BIG BUCKS on our gear and should use whatever we feel the safest with That said, i like my windscreen/DINa KwonBar/Shure a53m method and will probably always use that method in the future

I have flown with 4v's many times! the absolute safest way to go is to just keep them in the schoeps plastic containers they came in. Its not that big of a deal to screw them on once you arrive at your destination. Now that being said, I have flown with them still on the active cables because I was lazy and just left them in their windscreens. If you have a nice bag, everything should be protected. Just place it in the overhead bin in a way it cant be moved around. good luck and safe travels

When I traveled with my 41s and 5s down to NC recently, I left everything in my gear bag as normal - with the caps screwed onto the active cables and in their windscreens) and carried it as my carry-on.  I placed it under the seat so I could be sure nothing would get stuffed on top of it.  Certainly, the vials are safer, but unless you're really slinging the bag around and banging it into things, the caps are protected just fine in the windscreens in a padded bag.

In some respects, storing in the vials isn't safer...just depends on how you store your stuff.  The vials are loose and easer to misplace and/or fall out than if you leave your capsules connected.  It happened to me once I can't remember where or how...I just remember the five or six skipped heartbeats I experienced when I for some lucky reason looked on the ground and saw the vial with one of my capsules.  I think it slipped out of a snorkel that had accidently opened or something like that.  Ever since then, I leave my capsules attached until I get home.
