ISO Windtech clamp bolts - ideas?
« on: October 17, 2012, 06:34:18 PM »
I have 2 Windtech clamps that are missing the bolts, rendering them useless.  Is there somewhere I can find replacement bolts, or do I have to just buy whole new clamps.  Ideas?

Thanks

Probably not.  They're sort of specialized to audio/visual type stuff I think.  I've looked locally in the past and couldn't come up with anything.  I don't know anything about the technical terms of these things so the closest I could come up with was "Spigot Stud Adapters."  Not quite right, but on the right track.

I replaced the bolts that I think you are referring to.  Look in your local hardware store for "socket head cap screws".  I believe the screws for the windtech are metric, but I'm not positive on the size.  Bring your clamp with you and find the right one to fit.

Yeah, my first thought is what are you talking about?  If you're talking about the nickel plated thing that has the 5/8 inch male adapter on one end, I'd call that the stud.  If you're talking about the screw the locks onto the stud, I'd call that the thumbscrew.

I bought a replacement thumbscrew from B&H (don't remember size though), but I don't know where you could get a replacement stud.  You can also get a cap-screw from your local Lowes that will fit.  It will work if you want to use an Allen wrench or pliars to tighten it.  I used the capscrew for awhile, but got tired of it cause I couldn't tighten down well enough without carrying an extra tool with me.  I wasn't able to find the right size thumbscrew in the hardware section of the store, so I ordered from B&H.

Yes, this is the stud that is on the end of the clamp to screw on a stereo bar, or shock mount.  Standard 5/8" thread.

Found one in a friend's gear bag, so I'm only missing one now.

PM sent.

Thanks

Big thanks to Bean!  Bolt arrived in the mail the other day.  Can't say enough about the guys in this group; always willing to help each other out.

Cheers!

I'm going to bump this because I'm in need of this as well now.  Anyone have any more ideas?

I've got a windtech that's missing this:

You might want to try one of these.  Remove the nut on the small end and throw that away, then use a file to flatten/remove the threads from the small end...

Fill it with epoxy to give it additional strength from being crushed when you tighten the thumbscrew on the Windtech clamp.

Alternatively, a stronger and more robust solution...

...start with one of these...

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/232829-REG/K_M_21700_000_01_21700N_Threaded_Adapter.html

Add one of these...

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/840839-REG/Kupo_KG000812_Hex_Stud_3_8_16_M.html

or this...

Mod either of the above as needed to remove the unneeded ends, flatten threads, remove burrs and round edges with these...

...and then permanently affix them together with this...
