iRiver h120 problem - need help
« on: March 08, 2013, 12:45:58 PM »
I have two iRiver h120 recording devices. One I have had for several years that I am having problems with. It may be beyond help but I'm not sure, and at this point I think I'm going in circles so I need some help.

Here's the story: Last summer I taped some festival sets and my iRiver ran out of disc space midset. Whoops. I hastily deleted a couple songs and got it back going. The next day when I went to transfer the recordings off I could not get one of the files (the second half of the show after it ran of space). I was getting errors reading the disc copying the file. I should mention I'm a 40 something IT guy so not my first rodeo with devices though I do not claim to be an iRiver specialist (or I wouldn't be here - hah). At that point I was pissed and I wanted that file. There were no other sources and I took a board patch because the band forgot their device. I read a little bit on here and I dinked around with different machines trying to read the files with no luck. I finally did a check disk and it asked to repair the disc and I let it. I think that's probably where things started going south. On the positive at that point I was able to get the file off the iriver.

Problem was I was getting ATA ERROR -1 now. From what I read that didn't look good. I tried pressing on the end to get the card to touch if but that didn't seem to help. I should mention an no time did I drop the device or do anything out of the ordinary IMO that would have caused a hardware problem. At that point I started getting kind of desperate. I copied the entire contents of the iriver to my PC. I tried reinstalling the firmware. I then formatted and tried reinstalling from scratch. That probably didn't help. Now I can't get it to boot. The only way I can get it to do anything is plug in from the AC power. It gives me a USB MODE message. I can plug in the USB cable and reset (insert pin to reset button) and it will boot up and show me the contents of the iriver when I have the usb plugged into my PC.

But that's all I can do. If anyone reading this can help I would really appreciate it. I have two rigs I like to run and I have a DA-P1 that I have been using but I really don't like pulling that out and if I do would rather use it for board patches. I would love to get this second iriver back in the game, or I'm going to buy another device, and my wife claims my kids need new shoes.

I'd be willing to mail the iRiver to a trustworthy person if they thought they could fix it and send it back to me. Any help would be appreciated.....

Can't offer any help but if you don't get any assistance here, another site with iRiver enthusiasts was AnythingbutIpod.com
