Clips for holding a thin cable to a Schoeps "active tube"
« on: April 19, 2013, 09:49:27 PM »
Hi. Does anyone know a source of plastic clips to keep a thin cable attached to an 8 mm-diameter rigid tube?

I mean something like the black plastic C-shaped clips (with a bump in the middle of the "C" for the microphone cable) that come with many microphone stands, but smaller.

^ ^ ^ those look like the new style WindTech makes but according to the Wind-Tech page the smallest they make, the CC-1, fits poles of 15mm diameter

8mm is pretty small - .315"

Those look pretty nice, and that they would be quite snug.  But I wonder if they spread open enough to clip over the pole, or if they must be slid on from the end?  Also hard to tell what their size range is - I did not see a spec.

If you pop into an instrument store that sells on stage stands and stuff, they might have some floating around they'd just give you.  Especially if you just need a coupe or few. But maybe not in that small diameter.

Those Røde clips look very nice. I'm in NYC, so this week I'll stop by B & H and see whether they fit or not.

This is for use with a Schoeps RC 700 or RC 1200 active extension tube. The RC -- is like a rigid version of an active cable (the attached photo shows a well-known example of its use). I'd like to attach a second capsule to it with an active cable, and the clips are for holding the active cable to the active tube.

I'd be interested in clips for this too.

I've done the same thing a few times and in the absence of any suitable clips I just attached the active cable to the tube using small cable ties (2.5mm x 100mm long) and snipped them off again afterwards. They're cheap to buy in bags of 100/1000 and if you put the locking bit on the underside/stage side of the tube they're pretty discreet; the audience sees just a 2.5mm wide black band round the cable/tube. Incidentally, if possible I'd run the active capsule under the tube mounted capsule and run the cable down the underside of the tube as it looked a little bit neater.

Alas, the Røde clips are a lot larger than I thought (see photo attached). They're well suited for something else that I happen to need--spare clips for holding a cable to a mike stand, though (as are the WindTech CC-6, which B & H also carries).

So, I guess I'm looking for a miniature analog of the Røde clips. Or maybe these would shrink if I put them in the dryer?

From the specs of the Wind-Techs I think the CC-1 is a mini version of the Rode but if you need 3/8" you'll need a micro version, not a mini.

You might want to check with a local mechanic to see if he has anything you can use. I'm pretty sure the Schoeps tube is close enough to a spark plug wire's diameter that you may be able to use a spark plug wire holder unless the mic cable is considerably smaller than the  tube. From my days working in a shop I've seen many configurations of plug wire holders but can't recall any that look like tiny versions of the Rycote back-to-back mic clips as seen here: http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=144848.msg1920060#msg1920060 which is really what you need. A mechanic may know of something in that back-to-back style for holding various portions of a car's wire loom.

Good luck, and if you find something please let us know.

why not buy an RCY?  ::)

He just asked for some fifty cent clips, not a $1000 delicate aparatus that does not lend itself to being transported, and which is not length adjustable ;)

Plus, he already has the best schoeps actives.

I'm attempting (apparently poorly) to tease DSatz, who seemed to be enquiring about an RCY here a while back. I was hoping he'd buy one and tell us how cool it us.  :djsmilie:
