Can I fix this buzzing sound with iZotope RX or?
« on: May 07, 2013, 11:37:54 PM »
https://soundcloud.com/deckert-audio/left-channel-buzz-example

L-ch. only. Fairly low level but as you can hear, the music often was quiet. Seems to be somewhere up around 9-10KHz but don't how to really find out. I want it gone.

I briefly tried iZotope RX's Hum Removal but that seems to be for low freq problems. (The low level roar is the auditorium's HVAC I haven't attacked.)

A quiet passage is your best bet with the denoiser module.  Have it learn the sound over a music-less part and then remove it from the entire piece.

I called it Hum Removal; it's the "Remove Hum" tool. Anyway, I can't get it to "learn" what I need even on this simple, short sample except what it finds in the 50-60Hz range.

I had better luck with the Denoise tool this morning. Default settings eviscerate the harp but the "best" and most time-consuming learn/fix settings are doing better at both preserving the harp and reducing the buzz. I think. Since the noise is only in the Left I may see what happens when applying the filter to only it.

But even here, the filter wants to excise all the low bass because it doesn't know what to look for. What I might do is take care of the low HVAC rumble first and try it again.

LOL I just ran the denoise filter on the entirety of the left channel and it turned that channel into a 9-second sound, shortening it. This has gone no where. Didn't even get rid of the noise.

I don't know about RX but in RX2 Advanced the hum removal and teh denoiser modules are separate monsters.  If you want to post the whole thing or pm me I can try look at it.  No promises...

Yes, sorry, RX 2 Advanced is what's here.

I've been able to essentially identify it as existing from about 5kHz on up, by listening to just the output of the noise within the Denoise tool.

I can’t get the frequency selection tool, and therefore the Denoise tool, to ignore the R channel, even when first clicking the little bar at the left that only selects the L channel.

At about 9.3 seconds weird things happen. For this left channel, While previewing only the noise, the noise removal appears to stop being removed. While previewing the full left channel, the noise is still heard, although lessened a little, but completely disappears at about the 9.3 seconds point while the harp continues.

My file is a 1.7GB 16/44 recording and this noise applies to much of it. My Soundcloud excerpt is typical, at least for the quiet passages. That page has a download link if you want to play with it, it's a 2.5MB wave file. Thanks.

I downloaded your excerpt last night and threw it into RX2 to at least view it.

I just took a quick, wild stab at it.

Interesting, thanks for taking the time. I've made a little headway as well and will post results of what I decide to leave it at later.

FYI, I threw it into the deconstruction module and was able to get some pretty quick but crude results.

You actually have lots of noise with that buzz. There is a pretty loud low freq hum, what seems to be wind noise...
Sounds like an outdoor performance (maybe a wedding?)

I loaded your soundcloud file up and found the following settings to be okay for much of the noise. (Rx Advanced)

Open the DeNoise module
Click on the Advanced tab
Leave the algo at default
Deselect the Adapt to Changing Noise Profile (I don't know why this is on by default?)
Deselect Link Tonal and Broadband
Turn all the Tonal sliders to the left (off)
Under Broadband,..
theshold -1.8
Reduction 10.8
Artifact Control,..
Global 1.8
Fine smoothing 6.9

Now, click the "+" tab to the right of the Learn tab
It opens the "Auto learn"
click that
Now open the lower section by clicking on the "More" tab
Whitening 4
Harmonic enhancement 5.9
Hi Freq synth 3.2
Suppression masking 6.2
Knee 3.9

Give that a try and refine. Be aware that when previewing, stop and start when you make changes or load them into the compare.
I just did a quick and dirty attempt so I'm sure it can sound better than the above settings.
