Nady SSM-5 mount (Schoeps A20 clone)

For those running Schoeps bars or 20mm 22mm* mics, I just got myself a Nady SSM-5 from Newegg Marketplace.  It came to $16 with shipping, which is the best price I was able to find.

I had initially contacted Busman asking about his mounts after reading this: http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=108038.msg1444476#msg1444476 but he was waiting for resupply from his manufacturer and in the meantime I found the Nady which was in stock now and much cheaper so I jumped on it.  Looks like quality stuff to me.  I just took some pics of the SSM-5 to compare to the 3 mounts in the old 2008 post linked above.

*EDIT: I found out after I got it that this is 22mm, but I was able to easily secure my 19mm mic bar using a few self-adhesive felt buttons inside the cradle.

Thats a great price. I own [3] real Schoeps A20 shocks, and 2 other shocks, so i dont need any shocks, but at that price, I may buy a couple just to have, because IMO, the A20 shocks are the best out there! They are frickin perfect with my KCY cables because of the cable holder on them

For price and size, IMO, the a20 are the best YMMV

And I'm just talking about running actives. For full bodied mics, I agree, the rycote are better. But they're bigger and more expensive than a20s.

The A20S is $112 new and every one I've ever owned developed cracks in the plastic over time. If we're talking about knockoffs, then we shouldn't be using the model number A20S. That model number is reserved for a genuine Schoeps made product.

A Rycote INV-6 is $62 and will last a lifetime. The plastic is more durable and you'll never need to change the elastic. I also don't think it's any bigger than an A20S, but ymmv. I'd take comparison shots, but I no longer own an A20S because they all broke.

so are these the smaller diameter cradle (20mm) or larger like the Busmans (22mm) in which case gaffers tape would be needed to make snug?  Good deal I'm likely going to grab a set thanks for the link!

I really like how the A20S fits in my small bag too! And I buy Scunci hair ties and redo all of the elastics anyway, which are a lil sturdier than the A20S elastics

Thanks for the link to the OP! I will be buying one or two just to have. If someone snaps some pics of an Invision 6 w/ a schoeps active bar, I would def consider one of those too!

I posted in your pic request thread as well on this. I got a couple inv-6's for xmas and coincidentally also snapped up an inv-6 for about $35 on ebay a couple weeks ago. the inv-6 will definitely do the job for the ORTF/DIN/DINa size bars. It MAY start to get a little unstable with bars that are longer. The inv-7 is intended to support full bodies like the AKG 460s and CMC-6's and thus has a little wider spacing.

unless beaten to it I should be able to put up a pic of my follownbob ortf bar in an inv-6 tonight.

The nice thing about the A20S and the mounts in this thread are that the cradle comes out entirely and they become a bit smaller/flatter when broken down if you choose to do so. The invision mounts do not collapse much other than to fold the base up against the bottom of the support. so they will take up a bit more space but I'd say they are worth it. They can be interlaced and two won't take up much more space than a single. probably comparable to two A20S's in that case.

it just occurs to me that I might be able to get two inv-6s in a porta-brace multi-bag with two UA896's and an active bar or two. I'll have to try that out when i get home.

I just measured with the calipers, and it's 22mm.  According to his website, Busman sells 22mm and 20mm sizes.  I didn't find out this cradle was the larger size until I got it, and since I'm using an active bar that is 19mm, that's quite a bit of tape to take up the difference.  I have heard of some people bending the cradle tighter using a heat gun, but I'm not sure I will be able to do that without breaking it.  I'll probably just line the cradle with some felt padding or something to make up the difference.  There are a couple places that sell Schoeps cradles in the 20mm size, but just the cradle alone is more than I spent for this entire mount. 

Scratch that last bit, the Schoeps A20/A20s cradle is available for $12.  Redding has crazy expensive shipping though, more than the part alone.  Posthorn you can't do online ordering; hopefully it's more reasonable.  Either way, I'm happy to spend just a few bucks on some felt instead.

It's probably easiest to snag the picture from their product brochure. Yes, you want the INV-6 if you're using an active mounting bar. If you wanted to run just the actives, the INV-5 would be what you need.

I should also mention that the Rycotes are compatible with any microphone 19-25mm, not just 20mm or 22mm.

The Rycote brochure agrees with you, but I really think an INV-6 would be just fine for either microphone. For sure with the Schoeps. I think you only need to step up to the INV-7 when you're dealing with really long mics like shotguns, although the INV-7 might be useful for wide-omni active bars vs. the ING-HG.

Interesting, i admit I haven't tried the CMC6's or 460s in the inv-6's yet to see how they work. I should do that. I was thinking I might return two of them and get inv-7's but maybe i'll be ok with these for now.

I had never held these in my hand before so I was a bit surprised just how small they really are when I  opened the box. I needed to hold one to really appreciate it.

The INV-5s are what I use for my actives. Similarly rock solid.

Thanks for this info AJ, this is the question I just posted in my INV thread! Can anyone snap a pic of an INV6 or MKII/MKIII next to a lighter or a quarter or something so I can see the size of them?
