Zoom H5 announced

Looks like the H6 minus two XLR inputs.  The H5 does have two XLRs on the bottom end of the recorder, and can record two external channels while it records two channels from the mics on the top.  The X-Y mic module is removable.  The H6 modules (two extra XLR, mid-side mic, or zoom mic) will fit.

I didn't see size or weight specs, but it should be smaller than the H6.   Since the H6 costs about $400, I expect the H5 to have a MSRP around $300.

Mics on built in shock mounts !! I wonder how durable they are.

I don't see any 20db pad switches, maybe they are on the side, it would be
a shame if they had been left off.

Looks cool, but agreed that the shock mounts are nonsense. So is it possible to have 4 channels without using the internal mics? Looks like that module in the link a couple posts up would allow for 4 XLRs at once.

I'm waiting for something like the DR-2d that does 4ch with no internals.

What are the shockmounts everyone is complaining about? how do the built in mics on the unit look? is it essentially a smaller unit with the h6 x y mics stapled on top? If not, I wonder what the difference between the h6 XY mics and the h5 internal mics will be.

It appears the mics on the H5 are also modular, not stapled on. You can use the modules from the H6. The shockmount are on the mics and could be useful if you have the recorder screwed on a mic stand or with a camera.

The H5 looks very much to be the H4n's successor.  Nice part is the XLRs don't stick out the side so you might be able to put a proper case on it :-)

Would you every need 6 channels for HDSLR recording?  I'm not sure if the H6 is needed any more.  The nice part about the H6 was the better preamps which were the H4n's weakness...

Well, for twice at least, since the H6 XY is also coincident, unlike the Sony offerings and others.

Shock mounts? Seriously??   

My immediate thought is how useful this will be for folks who use the H5 handheld if the shock mount is effective. Nearly all these portable recorders transmit a lot of handling noise to the mics and make mounting them mandatory. If this can be used in the hand it opens up lots of new uses.

The H6 doesn't overdub as effectively as the H4n, less flexibility in assigning inputs. I find no mention of overdubbing capability in the H5 blurbery.

Mainstream audio retailers are starting to advertise the Zoom H5 at $270, but no one has stock quite yet.  This price is about $125 less than the price of the H6.

It doesn't on the H6. Another thing that strikes me is the lack of a 3.5 mm mic input on the H5's XY microphone module.
