Need firewire card help
« on: April 10, 2004, 02:21:43 AM »
Just bought a firewire card of ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3472086371&category=64458&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWN%3AIT&rd=1
I put it in the slot and I've got nothing, no auto install or anyting. I then went to control panel>add new hardware and tried to manually install it, again nothing. My operating system is win 98. Any ideas as to the problem?

I experienced the exact same problem as you.  bought a $15 firewire card off ebay:

(I didn't actually buy from compgeeks, just some vendor on ebay)

Basically I made multiple attempts at installing the pci card, but my computer would freeze whenever I booted. Anyway I'm running xp but while I didn't find any info regarding os compatability issues, I found lots of information that points to motherboard compatability issues with cheaper cards and certain older motherboards. that's what I suspect, seeing as my comp is not all that young.  here's my thread on the issue:

I know this sounds stupid but you did try plugging in the device to the firewire card, right?   Nothing popped up when you did that too I assume?

I believe that he hasn't even been able to install the actual firewire card, in the sense that his computer is not recognizing it.

Correct, the computer isn't recognizing it. I bet it's the motherboard issue, my p.o.s. machine is like 5 years old.
