Topic: Recommended microphone to replace the Sony ECM-DS70P?

I've been using the Sony ECM-DS70P for a whopping 14 years straight with several recorders. Mostly portable MiniDisc recorders, but since last year I'm finally using a solid state based Sony PCM-M10 recorder. It works great with the trusty DS70P, but I think it's time to switch to a better mic.

If possible, I'd like a mic that doesn't need an external pre-amp, to avoid needing to add extra bulk to my pockets and having to worry about yet another battery accessory. Also, I'd like the mic to be able to record loud shows. The low sensitivity DS70P mic was very good for this.

Any suggestions?

And are you looking for a 'single mic' ala the Sony mic (I know it has L/R parts but it is one piece), or are you looking for a stereo pair of mics?

If I were to 'upgrade' to a single, point-and-shoot stereo mic, it would be to either the Audio-Technica AT822 or the Audio-Technica AT8022.  The AT822 is no longer manufactured, but can be found (from time to time) in the Yard Sale and on eBay.  I've heard some damn fine recordings made with an AT822.

Both can be powered with internal batteries or with P48 Phantom Power.

The DS70P chops off the bass at 100 Hz.

 Sony paired it with MD because MD would overload with too much bass. I am a recovering MD user, so I understand why Sony did it.

But the PCM-M10 is way more robust, and if you go to a stereo pair, you can get so much better sound.

One inexpensive setup is mic-->battery box-->Line-in. You'll get improved sound over the Sony mic with Sound Professionals BMC-2 and one of their battery boxes.
