mic angles and spacing

I have read up on mic spacing and angles and have x/y down but that is about it.  I would like to try out some new configurations this summer and the best help i have found is from other tapers at shows.  I find it very confusing to try and figure out some diffrent configs with the TL's and the akg bar.  I also have the shure bar but with these mics nothing seems correct.  Even when i look at dpa or any of the other sources from diffrent configs nothing seems correct with the TL's.  I haven't been taping that long and would like to hear what my mics can sound like without being in x/y.  I'm sure this isn't an easy thing to explain or maybe i'm just not seeing what i'm supposed to.  Thanks for any help you can give.

I also have pieces of those lengths, but a good way for me of figuring out angles is to start at 90* and eyeball it.  Even if you're not dead on 80* or 110* etc... that's the part of experimentation that makes for great tapes, IMO

To add to the original question, and of course, I know the answers aren't really simple, but what do you use to decide which config to use?

I tape mostly in crappy bars w/ poor room acoustics and/or poor sounds systems, so I usually use the Hyper config on my TL's, and I have read that XY will limit the boominess, so I have pretty much been using that exclusively.

I am wondering though- what are the criteria that one would use in deciding to run DIN or ORTF instead of XY?  

I am also always afraid of making a recording that blows too...

Do you think that, overall, the differences are subtle?  If so, I might not need to worry so much about not pulling a crappy tape...
