Question about taping from the soundboard
« on: April 25, 2004, 03:57:48 PM »
So I'm going to see OAR on Friday, and as you all probably know, they allow soundboard taping.  I'll be there with my JB3 taping, but I was wondering if you think it would be safe to just leave my stuff back there at the board, and go up and enjoy the show, or is that a bad idea?  I'll be there with some damn fine girls and don't want to chill in the back the whole time making sure no one steals my stuff.  Is there anything I can do to maybe conceal the gear?  Maybe talk to the sound guys and see if they'll keep an eye on it?  Thanks! :)

The sound guys will likely be busy and not terribly interested in watching your stuff.  If you're willing to take the chance, just ask another taper to keep an eye on it and go party with your damn fine girls.

sorry, this post just sounds so stereotypical... it just struck me as pretty funny.

Yea, yea, yea, I know.  And I am not your typical OAR fan.  OAR fans suck, and the only way I am going to be able to deal with them during the show is to get plastered.

it was the whole "damn fine girls" crack that I thought was so funny... nothing personal at all, just thought it was funny!

hehe, don't mess with ccronks, he's like 6'10"!  Not sure about leaving the gear laying around unsupervised, if you get friendly with a taper, maybe they'll be kind enough, but i wouldn't expect it.

i dunno about your scene, but for me, as long as the recorder like left very far away from the board and in the open with nothing else near it, the chances of ppl stealing it are pretty slim.  normal ppl don't go near the board because they're afraid they'll bump into something stopping the show or something.  just try to keep your recorder near the board and tucked away.

if you're patching off of me I'd rather you bugoff, unless we're fob and need blockers.

Depending on venue, I'd be more concerned about some one who's all toasted accidently stomping all over my gear in their stupor. They don't mean anything by it; but equipment seems to be a drunk magnet.

Definitely. I hit a show here on Friday that was in a seated theater; my seats were up in the second balcony but I set up my rig next to the soundboard, stayed there for a few songs, then left to go hang with my friends in my seats. Of course, it's venue and crowd-dependent (no way in HELL I'd leave my gear alone at an OAR show), but it's not unheard of.

You gotta ask yourself one question....

Are the damn fine chicks worth more than your JB3?

I've watched other people's gear at OAR shows, never for an entire show, but at the Aragon this past tour, one guy was gone for about half an hour. It depends on how many other tapers are there watching their stuff, you can normally get away with it depending on who else is there. Also, get your stuff in some kind of bag so that people can't see what it is. If they see flashing lights, or if they notice it looks like an unattended CD player, it's as good as gone.

Have fun Connor!
